Once you have made the decision to remodel your home, there are a lot of places in the home that may need work, and you will have to prioritize where you spend your money.  You want to have the most impact with the remodel and you want a place where you can express your personality.  The three most common places where you can spend your money in the remodel are the living room, the kitchen or a brand new room.

Living Room

If you are looking for a place where your remodel will be appreciated the most, then the living room is the best place to start.  When you have company over or you have family gatherings, most of the time will be spent in the living room, so you want a room that is large, open and comfortable for your guests.  It is also the place where your family is going to spend a lot of time, so you want all of the comforts that you can add in this room.  a great start is to make the path to the living room wide and open.  You want the room to call to visitors and you want them to drift into the living room as quickly as possible once they enter your home.  Some good choices include high ceilings and a central seating area where you can talk or sit together and watch television.  When the project is finished, it will not add as much value as some of the other remodeling tasks that can be done to your home.

Kitchen

The kitchen is a very common remodel, but it is also one of the most expensive.  Understand that when you do a kitchen remodel, you are going to need the general contractor, a plumber and an electrician at the very least.  The project only gets more expensive when you move appliances around or when you make changes to where the plumbing lines need to go.  With a kitchen remodel you can create a place where you can cook the kinds of meals that you want and you can carve out a place for your family to have dinner together.  The layout of your kitchen after your remodel will say a lot about your personality and your family.  A large kitchen indicates elaborate meals shared with friends and family, while a small kitchen indicates a family that is on the move.  Work with your contractor to find the right layout and appliances for the kitchen you want.  This is a place where you will add a lot of value to your home, but only if the work is done well and you can find a buyer that has similar attitudes about food and family.

Addition

A more extreme way to remodel the home is to just add another room.  This option will cost a lot more money than the other options, but it gives you some extra freedom in your design and it will add the most value to the home.  Every additional room is an additional selling point for your home, and when it comes time to sell, you will have a much easier time selling it.  A good contractor will be able to make the new addition seem like it was an organic part of the home so that it will look like it was there from the very beginning.  The last thing that you want is a home addition that sticks out like a sore thumb because of mismatched shingles or siding.

When you remodel your home, it will increase in value and make it easier for the home to sell down the line.  Money spent on a home remodel will give you the chance to make the home into something that you want, as well as making your home worth more.
